Nepal   Rural Orphanage AidCamp September 2006
The orphanage after the addition of the extra floors
The orphanage after the addition of the extra floors

This AidCamp was held in conjunction with our partner organisation Rural Community Development Programme (RCDP) in the rural village of Rampur in the Chitwan valley region of Nepal, where RCDP runs an orphanage for some of the many dispossessed and homeless children of the country.

This project provided an extension to the orphanage, adding a new dormitory floor, and a part-floor with additional bathrooms facilities.

The major construction was completed by local labourers, paid for by the AidCamp, before the group arrived.  The volunteers finished the floors and plastered, painted and decorated the extensions.

The volunteers were also taken on visits to see other projects in the area, as well as on several local and regional sightseeing trips.

The following report about the AidCamp was written by Yvonne, one of the volunteers:

"Well! Where do I begin?!

Last February a friend showed me the information from the AidCamps International website and I looked on with interest!  Here was a charity that was willing to take all the responsibility of booking accommodation, providing food, 'ventures a new' and above all giving me an opportunity to prove my self worth and learn something new along the way ... without any effort at all!

All I had to do was pay the registration fee, make my donation, sort and pay for my flight and any extra spending money, then I was well on my way to what I can only describe as a 'Life Changing Experience!'

As the months passed by, once I had booked, AidCamps staff kept me well informed as to what would happen next.  As the date drew near I got to know what my kit list should entail and any other relevant information I would need for my trip.  It all seemed so easy ... and it was!

The whole experience leaves me quite speechless from start to finish!  (This is so unlike me!)  But I must go on to let you know how truly wonderful it all was!

Meeting, helping and being a part of the children and carers in the orphanage was so humbling (if thatís the right word?)  What amazing people the Nepalese are!  They are so warm, sincere and inspirational!

Everyone we met with the greeting 'Namaste!', and even those we just smiled at and acknowledged, were so responsive with their own individual smiles!

The work itself of helping to extend on the childrenís orphanage was in the first week, no easy task!  The second and third week got easier but along the way it was all so rewarding!  When we arrived and were told of the jobs to be done, I think, if we are all honest, thought we would never accomplish those tasks!

But how rewarding it was to find we were all of the same passion and enthusiasm to achieve great goals!!  The planned leisure weekends in between were professionally organised and so relaxed that we were all ready to do whatever happened next!

During the 3 weeks we all became part of one big family and again I was so moved by the warmth and understanding of each individual there.  Our team was made up of various ages from 20 years old to 72 and all with different characteristics!  To meet people from around the world and get along with them so easily was just another bonus to our venture.  You would have thought we had crossed paths before in life.

The whole 3 weeks was so moving, I could go on and on ... but please if you have any questions or just need to know more, donít hesitate to get in touch..."

Asked to rate their overall experience of this AidCamp, the volunteers replied as follows:
